Sou De Qualquer Lugar
(2001)

This new CD from the Bahia-born singer-actress-dancer Daniela Mercury is a danceable and diverse mélange of Brazilian pop, trip-hop, funk, house, drum & bass, and lounge music styles. Mercury's pithy vocals effortlessly float above the aforementioned world beats. The material on this CD ranges from Mercury's techno-driven work "Aeromoca" and "A Praieira" from Chico Science, to the samba-reggae tracks "Estrelas" and Gilberto Gil's "Quem Puder Ser Bom Que Seja." Mercury also puts her stamp on Carlinhos Brown's clave-samba number "Baiana Havaneira" and "Bora Mora." The highlight of this CD, however, is the elegant "Beat Lamento," a hypnotic track that puts Mercury in the musical realm inhabited by Les Nubians and Sade. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Whatever they put in the water in Salvador, Brazil, seems to work wonders. Not only has the city produced talents like Caetano Veloso, Olodum, and Margareth Menezes, but also the queen of percussive axe music, Daniela Mercury. On her first studio outing in three years, she puts an extra gloss on the production (thanks to Emilio Estefan Jr., Gloria Estefan's husband), but it doesn't obscure the strong roots of her music. Instead, it puts her in a position to reach a much broader audience with plenty of electric guitar on tracks like "Axe Axe" and rhythms that make sitting still impossible. Even when she lowers the flame, as on the samba-ish "Sou Voce," her rich voice remains irresistible. Few artists can cover the spectrum of their music with such passion and integrity, and reconcile art and commerce in such a package. --Chris Nickson

Electrica

Elétrica
(1999)

Wow. This is a fantastic CD. I'm always amazed at the amount of energy that Brazilians have -- performers and audiences alike -- and this live CD easily captures both. (I went to more than a few shows in Salvador where the main act went on -- full steam -- for 3+ hours!) I love Daniela's studio albums, but this live version has so much energy and "paixao" that it becomes all that much more exciting to listen to. If you have any interest at all in Brazilian music, this is a must-have.--an Amazon reviewer

Feijao Com Arroz

Feijão Com Arroz
(1997)

I can't begin to say how good this CD is. I simply end up exhausted every time after I listen to it, from singing and dancing. Even though it is mostly high energy, dance music called axé, Daniela Mercury still has one of the greatest voices I've ever heard. And no-one can match her energy. There is not one bad, or even average, song on the CD. The best cuts are "A Primeira Vista", "Feijao de Corda", Dona Canô" and "Minas Com Bahia". It makes no difference whether you understand Portuguese or not, buy this CD. Afterward, you will be dying to go to Carnaval in Salvador, Bahia in Brasil. --an Amazon reviewer
