Zelia Duncan (E-Collection) First time I've listen Zélia was in duo with Dinho Ouro Preto (Capital Inicial). It was a good "entrée" to her strong and smooth voice. She sings from her to ours heart. On E-Collection she keeps her strong self-expression that again touch us. Her interpretation on "O Tempo Não Para" (Cazuza & Arnaldo Brandão) bring Cazuza back to earth! Bravo Zélia! Gonna keep tracking your work! --an Amazon.com reviewer

If you listened to all the tropicalismo-MPB stuff years ago
and wonder why the U.S. is only now stumbling upon Caetano Veloso (how old is he
now, 60?) and OS Mutantes (duh! maybe it would've been nice to hear about the
band while it still existed?), Zelia Duncan and Adriana Calcanhoto are two
interesting new Brazilian singers who write their own stuff. Duncan's singing
voice is maybe even lower than Simone's or Maria Bethania's -- if you know these
singers, you know that's sub-alto somewhere -- which will add interest value
when your friends ask "who's that guy singing" and you hand them her CD.
Regardless, her songs are tight and rock-oriented (no sambas, none of the
interminable Buarque/Veloso/Djavan covers that even late-1990s Brazilian singers
can't seem to stay away from). It'll be interesting to see how her career
progresses.
