Singer, songwriter, accordionist Luiz Gonzaga ("Gonzagao"), born in Pernambuco popularized the festive, accordion-driven northeastern styles of baiao, xote, chamego ("xamego"), coco, and xaxado (collectively referred to as "forro") in Brazil, in an illustrious career that stretched from the '40s through the '80s.
